{"id":13428,"date":"2020-04-30T21:26:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T01:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/airpurifierspecialist.com\/store\/?p=13428"},"modified":"2020-05-19T11:24:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T15:24:16","slug":"children-do-transmit-covid-19-to-adults-says-researcher-whose-study-was-misunderstood-as-evidence-that-kids-cannot-spread-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/airpurifierspecialist.com\/store\/children-do-transmit-covid-19-to-adults-says-researcher-whose-study-was-misunderstood-as-evidence-that-kids-cannot-spread-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Children &#8216;do transmit COVID-19&#8217; to adults, says researcher whose study was &#8216;misunderstood&#8217; as evidence that kids cannot spread coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-piano-inline-content-wrapper=\"\" id=\"piano-inline-content-wrapper\">\n<ul>\n<li>Some news outlets reported that children cannot transmit COVID-19, based on a recently published review of 78 previous COVID-19 studies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>One of the researchers issued a statement clarifying that children &#8220;almost certainly do transmit COVID-19.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The World Health Organization has also cautioned against claims that children cannot transmit COVID-19, reminding the public that there is a lot scientists still don&#8217;t know about the disease.<\/li>\n<li><a data-analytics-module=\"summary_bullets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/?hprecirc-bullet\">Visit Business Insider&#8217;s homepage for more stories<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As governments weigh the costs and benefits of lifting lockdowns, a debate over just how vulnerable children are to COVID-19 is emerging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland&#8217;s infectious diseases chief <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/children-can-hug-their-grandparents-swiss-infectious-disease-chief-2020-4\">declared<\/a> this week that children under the age of 10 &#8220;don&#8217;t have the receptors to catch the disease,&#8221; and the country is reopening its public schools on May 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the picture was further muddied by coverage of a large <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dontforgetthebubbles.com\/evidence-summary-paediatric-covid-19-literature\/\">review <\/a><a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dontforgetthebubbles.com\/evidence-summary-paediatric-covid-19-literature\/\">of 78 available studies<\/a> conducted by the UK Royal College of Paediatrics, which said: &#8220;The role of children in transmission is unclear, but it seems likely they do not play a significant role.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first articles to cover the review said there was no evidence to date that any children had passed the virus on to adults.<\/p>\n<p>But one of the researchers that authored the review in question, Alasdair Munro, insists their findings were misunderstood, and that children can indeed pass the virus to adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure data-e2e-name=\"image-figure-image\" data-media-container=\"image\" data-type=\"img\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"coronavirus children\" data-content-type=\"image\/png\" data-srcs=\"{\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/5eab1ed842278d0b8f26a623\":{\"contentType\":\"image\/png\",\"aspectRatioW\":4,\"aspectRatioH\":3}}\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 1 1'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>      <span><br \/>\n          <span data-e2e-name=\"image-source\"><br \/>\n            Getty<br \/>\n          <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/span><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Children almost certainly DO transmit COVID-19,&#8221; Munro, a clinical research fellow in pediatric infectious diseases at University Hospital Southampton, said on <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/apsmunro\/status\/1255876771796471808\">Twitter<\/a> on Thursday, adding: &#8220;Growing evidence suggests children are less susceptible to infection, have milder infection, and are infrequently responsible for household transmission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Royal College of Pediatrics also corrected the record, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCPCHtweets\/status\/1255838973584379905\">tweeting<\/a> that &#8220;a number of media reports, citing RCPCH, have incorrectly suggested that children cannot transmit COVID-19. This is not the the RCPCH position, nor is it based on evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The confusion stemmed, in part, from a reference in the review to a study by the China\/WHO joint commission. People interviewed by members of the commission <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf\">could not recall<\/a> a single episode where a child transmitted the disease to an adult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the review also states: &#8220;Evidence that [children] are not a reservoir of disease does not exist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The evidence shows children are less likely to get seriously ill with COVID-19<\/h2>\n<p>The evidence shows that children are far less likely to get gravely ill with COVID-19, and the death rate among children is low.<\/p>\n<p>According to the US <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6914e4.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,<\/a> 1.7% of 150,000 American COVID-19 cases affected people under the age of 18. Globally the amount of children with COVID-19 is under 2% of all cases, from <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.03.15.20036368v1\">Korea<\/a> to <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2764394\">Spain<\/a> to <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2763401\">Italy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Iceland, where 6% of the population was tested, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LuNQ3Ij1HU?amp=1\">none of the 848 children tested<\/a> were positive. In a town in Italy where 2.6% of residents had the new coronavirus, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nlSYiVB0RS?amp=1\">0% of children under 10 years<\/a> tested positive.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/some-children-develop-severe-infections-from-coronavirus-2020-3?r=US&#038;IR=T\">Another study<\/a> of 2,000 children with COVID-19 in China found that 90% of them were asymptomatic, 39% developed pneumonia without symptoms, and 6% of children developed severe infections.<\/p>\n<h2>Experts warn there is nowhere near enough evidence to feel confident that children don&#8217;t spread the virus<\/h2>\n<p>SARS was another respiratory disease that also affected adults more than children. &#8220;Transmission of SARS from pediatric patients appears to be uncommon but is possible,&#8221; wrote the authors of a <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/pidj\/Abstract\/2007\/01000\/Severe_Acute_Respiratory_Syndrome_in_Children.14.aspx\">2006 study.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, German virologist Christian Drosten, director of the Institute of Virology at Berlin&#8217;s Charite hospital, urged policymakers to exercise caution when looking at studies examining the effects of COVID-19 on children. He <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/children-can-hug-their-grandparents-swiss-infectious-disease-chief-2020-4\">pointed out<\/a> that\u00a0the findings of a <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rivm.nl\/en\/novel-coronavirus-covid-19\/children-and-covid-19\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch study,<\/a>\u00a0which was used as evidence that children do not play a big role in spreading COVID-19, were not statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p>According to his own research, Drosten said, children can carry as high levels of the coronavirus as adults.
