It is still exceedingly rare.<\/li>\n<li>The <a data-analytics-module=\"summary_bullets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/media-resources\/press-briefings#\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) said on Wednesday it had put its clinical network on alert after <a data-analytics-module=\"summary_bullets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/doctors-find-serious-coronavirus-related-condition-children-symptoms-uk-covid-2020-4?r=US&#038;IR=T\">UK health officials noted cases<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a data-analytics-module=\"summary_bullets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/?hprecirc-bullet\">Visit Business Insider&#8217;s homepage for more stories<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Around 100 children in 6 countries have been reported as having a rare complication that doctors fear could be related to coronavirus, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/apr\/29\/more-cases-of-rare-syndrome-in-children-reported-globally\">The Guardian reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization has put its clinical network on alert since UK health officials <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/doctors-find-serious-coronavirus-related-condition-children-symptoms-uk-covid-2020-4?r=US&#038;IR=T\">first warned of the cases on Tuesday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cases combine toxic shock and symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease, a rare syndrome that causes inflammation of the arteries to the heart, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-children-inflammat\/three-us-children-with-covid-19-have-rare-inflammatory-syndrome-idUSKCN22A3D6\">Reuters reported<\/a>. The cases also have &#8220;blood parameters consistent with severe COVID-19 in children,&#8221; said the UK alert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There has been no confirmation of any connection to the coronavirus, but the alert spoke of a &#8220;growing concern&#8221; of the possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors across Europe are seeing a spike in cases, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.corriere.it\/salute\/malattie-rare\/20_aprile_28\/coronavirus-l-infiammazione-vasi-sanguigni-che-colpisce-bambini-ac22ec24-895f-11ea-8073-abbb9eae2ee6.shtml\">according to Italy&#8217;s Il Corriere Della Sera newspaper<\/a>. Pediatrician rheumatologist Dr Lucio Verdoni told Il Corriere Della Sera that they were seeing as many cases in one month than the hospital would normally see in three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In New York, three cases that appear similar to those reported in Europe are being treated, two of which are serious, <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2020\/04\/28\/us\/28reuters-health-coronavirus-children-inflammation.html?searchResultPosition=2\">Reuters said<\/a>. In an earlier case in California, a 6-month-old baby tested positive for coronavirus after being admitted with the new syndrome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mark Gorelick at Columbia University Medical Center in New York told Reuters that he does not believe the children have Kawasaki disease, but are experiencing a very similar immune response to an earlier infection of some kind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is possible, he said, that an earlier infection is having a delayed effect. &#8220;It seems a week to two weeks later, you may have the immune system responding in a very disorganized way,&#8221; he told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Pediatrician Dr Marianna Fabi, who is treating five cases at Bologna&#8217;s Sant&#8217;Orsola-Malpighi hospital, told <a data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" href=\"https:\/\/corrieredibologna.corriere.it\/bologna\/cronaca\/20_aprile_30\/bologna-04-t36corrierebologna-web-bologna-638e1ea6-8aaa-11ea-99b8-5b03ebafbffc.shtml\">Il Corriere Della Sera<\/a>: &#8220;Kawasaki syndrome does not have a precise cause, but in genetically predisposed children there is a triggering environmental factor, probably infectious and probably viral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A 3-year-old was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after a month of care, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>Kawasaki disease, which is rare, normally affects children up to the age of 8.
