{"id":13403,"date":"2020-04-30T16:32:42","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T20:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/airpurifierspecialist.com\/store\/?p=13403"},"modified":"2020-05-19T11:24:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T15:24:16","slug":"heart-attack-patients-are-avoiding-emergency-rooms-due-to-covid-19-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/airpurifierspecialist.com\/store\/heart-attack-patients-are-avoiding-emergency-rooms-due-to-covid-19-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart attack patients are avoiding emergency rooms due to COVID-19: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p>People experiencing cardiovascular emergencies seem to be avoiding hospital emergency rooms due to fears of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/coronavirus\/\">COVID-19<\/a>, putting their health at risk, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>Data compiled by Heart and Stroke and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society found that visits to Ontario emergency departments for ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarctions (STEMI) \u2014 a very serious type of heart attack \u2014 fell by nearly 30 per cent in the period between March 16 and April 12, compared to the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Similar numbers from Vancouver Coastal Health show a 40 per cent drop in STEMI patients over the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis last weekend was a good example,\u201d said Dr. Andrew Krahn, a cardiologist and president of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn downtown Vancouver, there\u2019s an on-call group that looks after acute heart attacks. And they for one weekend actually had none, which was the first time in 11 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cihi.ca\/en\/nacrs-emergency-department-ed-visits-volumes-and-median-length-of-stay-by-triage-level-visit\">Canadian Institute for Health Information<\/a>, there were 26,950 emergency department visits for heart attacks in the 2018-19 fiscal year, corresponding to an average of about 74 visits per day across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis data is distressing because there is no reason to believe that fewer events are happening,\u201d Krahn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no plausible reason why COVID-19 should make for less heart attacks or strokes, for example. Returning travellers are legally obligated to self-isolate for 14 days, beginning March 26, in case they develop symptoms and to prevent spreading the virus to others. Some provinces and territories have also implemented additional recommendations or enforcement measures to ensure those returning to the area self-isolate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6798969\/new-coronavirus-symptoms\/\">Symptoms<\/a> can include fever, cough and difficulty breathing \u2014 very similar to a cold or flu. Some people can develop a more severe illness. People most at risk of this include older adults and people with severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease.
