It was also the deadliest day for the city since the pandemic began, as twelve people died.<\/p>\n<p>Despite positive signs that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narcity.com\/news\/ca\/covid-19-curve-has-flattened-in-parts-of-canada-says-pm-justin-trudeau\">curve is flattening<\/a> in Canada, Tuesday was a record-breaking day for COVID-19 cases in Ottawa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On April 28, the city announced its biggest jump in the number of cases and deaths since the pandemic began. In one day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/en\/reports-research-and-statistics\/la-maladie-coronavirus-covid-19.aspx\">67 new cases<\/a> were confirmed, and 12 people died.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/en\/reports-research-and-statistics\/la-maladie-coronavirus-covid-19.aspx\">Ottawa Public Health<\/a>\u00a0also confirmed 1,221 total cases of novel coronavirus in the capital. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 71 people have died.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the people who have died are residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narcity.com\/news\/ca\/on\/ontario-long-term-care-homes-are-facing-a-body-bag-shortage\">long-term care homes,<\/a> many of which have seen significant COVID-19 outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday morning, long-term care facilities account for 455 of Ottawa\u2019s confirmed cases, and 52 deaths related to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s not all bad news.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa Public Health did confirm that an additional 28 people have now recovered from the respiratory illness, taking the total number of resolved cases to 529.<\/p>\n<p>This equates to approximately 43% of the city&#8217;s total confirmed cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/en\/public-health-topics\/novel-coronavirus.aspx?utm_source=OPH&#038;utm_medium=Home_Page_Banner&#038;utm_campaign=Coronavirus&#038;utm_content=Home_Page_Banner_OPH#April-27-2020---Special-statement-from-Dr-Vera-Etches\">a statement<\/a> earlier this week, Ottawa\u2019s Medical Officer of Health explained that surveillance testing has begun in nine of the city\u2019s long-term care homes.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of a provincial directive, that aims to take control of outbreaks in the region\u2019s care facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring this is managed is necessary before we can start <a href=\"%20https:\/\/www.narcity.com\/news\/ca\/who-released-new-covid-19-guidelines-and-normal-life-in-canada-seems-so-far-away\">returning to normal,<\/a> according to the World Health Organization\u2019s guide.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Across the rest of the country, some provinces are already making plans to start reopening.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having the most cases of COVID-19 in Canada, Quebec Premier Francois Legault <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narcity.com\/news\/ca\/qc-en\/quebec-will-start-reopening-in-may-while-having-the-most-covid-19-cases-in-canada\">confirmed on Tuesday<\/a> that the region would be restarting their economy next week.<\/p>\n<p>Over in <span class=\"nowrap\">Saskatchewan\u00a0and New Brunswick, similar plans are being made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While Doug Ford is yet to make any promises in Ontario, Mayor Jim Watson did promise the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narcity.com\/news\/ca\/on\/ottawa\/ottawa-farmers-markets-will-be-open-during-the-summer-despite-covid-19-concerns\">Ottawa Farmers&#8217; Market<\/a> would go ahead this summer, no matter what!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-wrap embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"native-embed embed twitter\" readability=\"5.5051020408163\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.0816326530612\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reading that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JimWatsonOttawa?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JimWatsonOttawa<\/a> is trying to make the farmers markets happen this summer is the best news I could\u2019ve received this morning \u263a\ufe0f\ud83d\udc68\ud83c\udffc\u200d\ud83c\udf3e<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tanya (@tansta_s) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tansta_s\/status\/1255118744722038784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 28, 2020<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite Tuesday\u2019s bad COVID-19 news, there\u2019s still plenty of positive signs in the capital city.<\/p>\n<p>Since April 14, the number of people in intensive care units with the virus has consistently dropped in Ottawa.
