Antonacci<\/span><span>Local Journalism Initiative Reporter<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span>Tue., April 14, 2020<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><span><i aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" pointer-events=\"none\" role=\"img\">timer<\/i><span>4 min. read<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-lpos=\"article|body\">\n<div>\n<p>Four more residents of Anson Place Care Centre have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths at the Hagersville long-term care facility to 19.<\/p>\n<p>The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit reported that as of Tuesday morning, 73 residents at the 101-bed facility have tested positive, as well as 31 staff who are now in quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Haldimand-Norfolk\u2019s chief medical officer of health, said that thanks to protective measures put in place at the home, residents who aren\u2019t sick are at low risk of contracting the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a new case today and we didn\u2019t have a new case yesterday,\u201d Nesathurai said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s a positive sign that there\u2019s not a new group of individuals getting sick, which suggests that the interventions that were put in place two weeks ago might be having an effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The death toll at Anson Place has been rising daily, but Nesathurai said that doesn\u2019t mean the virus is currently spreading within the facility.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anson Place in Hagersville is one of the worst hit care homes for positive cases and deaths from COVID-19.\" src=\"https:\/\/images.thestar.com\/q1cT3yhORo2En2Og5NqmSxcdnQ0=\/968x580\/smart\/filters:cb(1586896787658)\/https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/content\/dam\/thespec\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/04\/14\/four-more-covid-19-deaths-at-anson-place-19-residents-at-the-hagersville-care-facility-have-died-from-the-virus\/anson_place_2.jpg\" ><\/img><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe people who are currently sick at Anson Place were exposed two to two-and-a-half weeks ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, regrettably, there\u2019s likely to be more deaths. We are doing everything we can to try to prevent new people from getting ill, but I do also anticipate that the people who are currently ill, some will succumb to COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The health unit still isn\u2019t sure how the virus first got into Anson Place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have that answer today, and I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll have an answer for many weeks. It\u2019s a complicated type of assessment,\u201d Nesathurai said. \u201cBut we are definitely investigating this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nesathurai noted that many residents in long-term care have other health issues that compound the challenge for recovery. \u201cThe bottom line is, COVID-19 is a tough illness to have if you\u2019re in your eighth or ninth decade of life, especially if you have other medical problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Executive director Lisa Roth says Anson Place has been working with the health unit, the provincial health ministry, and the regulatory bodies for retirement homes and long-term care facilities to manage the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>All residents and staff have now been tested, and every resident is confined to their rooms, including for meals. Residents are checked twice daily for COVID-19 symptoms by staff wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had and continue to have the appropriate PPE supplies needed,\u201d Roth said.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are also checked twice daily and change into their work clothes at the home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people currently working at Anson Place are only working at Anson Place,\u201d Nesathurai said. \u201cThey\u2019re not doing any other activities, short of buying gasoline to fill up their cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roth said more nurses and cleaning staff have been brought in, and the facility has upped its cleaning and sanitizing efforts.<\/p>\n<p>If a staff member who had previously tested positive for COVID-19 subsequently has two separate negative tests, the health unit says they are cleared to go back to work.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sign of support for workers on a door at Anson Place in Hagersville.\" src=\"https:\/\/images.thestar.com\/i6tdtSFTUH0cB5lf1MPpLjlQHzw=\/850x552\/smart\/filters:cb(1586896787719)\/https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/content\/dam\/thespec\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/04\/14\/four-more-covid-19-deaths-at-anson-place-19-residents-at-the-hagersville-care-facility-have-died-from-the-virus\/anson_place_3.jpg\" ><\/img><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although the outbreak at Anson Place accounts for the vast majority of Haldimand-Norfolk\u2019s positive COVID-19 cases, Nesathurai said ventilators \u2014 which mechanically inflate weakened lungs and provide additional oxygen \u2014 have not been used to treat residents there. Instead, a doctor on site arranges for additional oxygen and medication for COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVentilators would not be provided in a place like Anson Place,\u201d he said, explaining that the potentially life-saving devices are typically reserved for hospital patients.<\/p>\n<p>The first resident of Anson Place to die of COVID-19 passed away at a Hagersville hospital March 26, but Nesathurai said subsequent residents have died at the care centre.<\/p>\n<div data-lpos=\"newsletter|get-more-from-the-spec-in-your-inbox\">\n<h3>Get more from the Spec in your inbox<\/h3>\n<p>Never miss the latest news from the Spec. That\u2019s always the balancing act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Community members have fastened signs to the Anson Place fence with messages of encouragement for nurses and other staff.
