Two at Plantagenet long-term care home die of COVID-19 complications

4 May 2020 /Posted byBarbara / 205

Two people in the region have died, as a result of complications from COVID-19.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit confirmed on Monday afternoon that a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s, both residents at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet, passed away on Sunday. Plantagenet is located between Hawkesbury and Rockland, in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell.

“I’m saddened by this news,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, medical officer of health for the region. “On behalf of the board of health and all EOHU staff, I’m offering our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased residents.

“This tragic news reminds us that we must continue to work collectively through personal hygiene precautions and community-based public health measures, like physical distancing, to contain the virus and limit the number of cases and deaths.”

COVID-19 assessment centres:

  • Cornwall – call 613-935-7762 to book – 850 McConnell Ave.
  • Akwesasne (residents of northern portion of territory only) – call 613-575-2341 ext. 3220
  • Winchester – 515 Albert St. – only open from 12 to 6 p.m. on weekdays
  • Casselman – 872 Principale St. – drive-through location only open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays
  • Rockland – call 613-933-1375 or 1-800-267-7120 to book –  Chamberland St.
  • Hawkesbury – 750 Laurier St. – only open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Roumeliotis said the EOHU has made testing of long-term care home staff members and residents a priority; that testing is ongoing, and that all facilities across the jurisdiction are scheduled to have been tested by the end of this week.

Roumeliotis in his daily media briefing on Monday afternoon said that his main focus in the ongoing battle with the virus is the “people in the long-term facilities who need our attention – that’s my main priority.”

He said that once an outbreak occurs, the EOHU immediately takes several steps, including aggressive infection control protocols and making sure personal protection equipment is available.

Regarding the Pinecrest outbreak and deaths, the doctor said one of the residents who passed away was from an original group of eight who had tested positive. The other victim was originally negative, but became symptomatic and was tested.

He said that in talking with other health officials, it’s a tragic occurrence being seen for many in the older demographic groups, that “people who test negative (or are asymptomatic) can develop serious symptoms very quickly, and (ultimately) die.”

In data updated Monday afternoon by the EOHU, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases for the catchment area rose to 101. There have been two deaths, and currently there are three patients hospitalized, with two of them in ICU. The breakdown of  local cases has 67 in Prescott-Russell (29 resolved), 20 in SDG (14 resolved) and 14 in Cornwall (11 resolved).

The number of cases listed as resolved is 54, and the total number of tests conducted at COVID-19 assessment centres across the region is 2,469.

Numbers that were crunched by the Standard-Freeholder earlier on Monday indicated that updated Ontario data matched the EOHU data from a day earlier – 98 cases in total for the region. A new case added to the Ontario data on Monday morning is a woman in her 60s, contact of a confirmed case.

In the good news department, three cases in Ontario data were set to resolved: a man in his 40s, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s. In the data-correction department, a man in his 80s and woman in her 80s added to the list on Saturday had their acquisition information change, from pending to neither. Also, from a case added to the Ontario list on Sunday, the episode date was changed to April 30 from May 1, the acquisition changed from neither to a contact of a confirmed case.

The provincial number of cases resolved for our region is 67, which continues to remain higher than the EOHU-provided number of 54.
