Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe provided an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Friday.
Yaffe reported 640 new cases of the novel coronavirus and 50 additional deaths, bringing the provincial total to 13,519 cases. The reported death toll has risen to 763.
She also said that 7,087 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 52.4 per cent of cases.
Yaffe said that they “remain extremely concerned” about the province’s long-term care homes and “other congregate settings” during the virus outbreak. She stated that there were 131 outbreaks in long-term care homes, and that 573 residents and one staff member have lost their lives to COVID-19. Yaffe added that they will continue to support all long-term care homes in the province to “keep the residents and staff safe.”
Friday’s report marks the highest single-day increase in positive cases, as Thursday saw 634 new cases.
